PRACTICAL TIPS FOR BOAT STORAGE

Years after year, fishing and sailing are some of the most popular winter boating activities across South Africa. But, once the season is over, boat storage can be expensive. Over time, the cost to rent amenities and space at the marina can definitely add up. So if you are wondering what you can keep some of those costs down, you might want to take a look at using self-boat storage systems as an option. However, there are some preliminary steps that you should take before to protect your watercraft during storage and to maintain its seaworthiness.
As well, you will need to select a facility that is capable of meeting your boat’s storage requirements.

Preparing your boat for storage

One of the biggest challenges during a storage period of several months is to overcome the risks of mildew and corrosion. This is just a common fact that storing facility in the marina is different from the self-boat storage system. You should follow some common safeguards to keep your watercraft safe.

  1. The Boat Interior: Remove fabrics, including leather items and canvas from the boat interior whenever possible to eliminate the risk of mold. Leave one moisture absorbent product inside; it will help to prevent moisture from building up to an extreme level. Empty the water tank and dry out every area of the boat where water may have accumulated to discourage mildew growth.
  2. The Boat Engine and Other Components: For interior engine spray some fogging oil to protect it from rust. Always make sure that the tank is full and you can also add some marine fuel stabilizer to prevent corrosion. Flush your boat’s coolant system and add some new antifreeze. Never forget to remove all batteries and drive belts. Otherwise, batteries will drain and belts can crack over the winter as your boat sits in storage.  Greece the steering mechanism and lubricate any bearing and joints or other moving parts with marine grade oils.
  3. The Boat Exterior: Wax your boat, a good coating of wax should apply after a thorough cleaning. It will prevent the potential rust formation during storage. Cover your craft, even if the facilities of storage area are protected by a canopy. You will still need a snug-fitting cover to protect your craft from the elements and to keep out moisture and dirt.

Storing a boat at a self-storage facility

Once your boat is ready to go for storage, the next thing you will need to evaluate the conditions onsite at the storage locations. You have to make sure that any facilities you choose have amenities that are suitable for storing your watercraft. Here are some practical tips that you should keep in mind while considering a potential facility:

  • You need to look for drive lanes at the sites that are wide enough to maneuver the boat trailer. Driveways should be at least 40 feet wide, you can check the facilities that are offered at second gate or pull through access for extra maneuvering ease.
  • You need to check the width and spacing of storage parking. For outdoor storage, you will have to ensure that the spaces available are sized appropriately for both your boat and its trailer. The parking spaces should be well-delineated with clear lines to prevent from crowding and it should have sufficient width for ease of access when backing into or out of space.
  • You need to measure the interior door height. When storing inside is an option, make sure there is sufficient height clearance on the door to the storage enclosure.
  • You should use a heavy-duty trailer lock. This is especially important if you are planning to store your boat out in the open. Multiple locks can function as an effective theft-deterrent and also as a safeguard. Keep locks on both hitch and wheels.
  • Always verify the presence of industry-standard security feature. These features include strategic placement of lighting, controlled access points, fencing and video surveillance. Make sure your self- storage boat system is proactive about keeping the site’s security features that are comprehensive, upgraded and also in sound working order.
